First of all,
thank you very much Paul for agreeing to answer this short interview for this
humble blog. You don't know how much I admire and respect you and your work.
But let's get
to the interview!
For those who
don't know, Paul Tremblay is a writer of horror novels and stories, winner of
the Bran Stoker Award. His best-known books are: "A Head Full of
Ghosts", "Disappearance
at Devil's Rock"
and "The Cabin at the End of the World", all characterized by posing
the reader the question of whether the cause of the situations presented there
are of supernatural or rational origin.
Tell us a little about yourself. It is known that your
passion for books began rather after the age of twenty and that you started
reading Stephen King. However, when did you decide that you wanted to become a
horror writer? And what was your first literary project that you worked on?
quien no debía haber matado.
I didn’t
make a conscious decision to be a horror writer. Horror stories were all I wanted to
write, at least initially. The first story I wrote was about Death personified
confronting a serial killer who had killed someone he wasn’t supposed to have
killed. It was not a very good story and it’s safely hidden in a locked trunk,
metaphorically speaking.
I identified as a horror writer until, at one point, I
decided that I was a ‘writer who wrote horror,’ which was and is an important
distinction. It means that whatever the story idea is, I will do all I can to
serve that story’s needs and not force it to be something it isn’t. I’m a
better writer for that distinction, I think.
What do you like most about the horror genre?
I like that
horror communicates on an emotional level, one that rings true to me. My
favorite horror stories at the ones that describe emotions that can only be
described via story. Plus, monsters are just cool.
Let's talk a little about "A Head Full of
Ghosts." Did you do any research on mental illness to propose it as a
possible explanation for what happens to Marjorie?
sobrenatural o no.
I did not. I
did more research concerning how the Church conflated mental illness or
epilepsy with symptoms of possession for hundreds of years. I hoped that
Marjorie’s symptoms were vague enough and so happened to fit within the classic
tropes of possession narratives that there would be doubt in the readers’ minds
as to whether or not something supernatural was happening.
mental)
While writing the novel, did you imagine that
suggesting this topic could resonate with readers related to mental health? (patients with disorders or, alternatively, mental health
professionals)
sociales.
I honestly try
not to think about how readers, especially specific readers, might connect with
a story or a book. It’s hard enough for me to write something that I think is
any good, something I would want to read myself. I trust there are enough
people like me out there who might enjoy the book I am enjoying.
What makes A
Head Full of Ghosts scary or unsettling to me (me being an agnostic skeptic,
someone who does not believe in possession or the supernatural) is that we
don’t and we’ll never know what is really happening in the novel with part of
the reason being that our brains have been so infected by cultural and
religious beliefs, as well as the digital data glut of our social media world.
Let's talk about " Disappearance at Devil's Rock."
What do you think about the lack of communication that teenagers currently
experience with their parents? Those secrets that are sometimes kept and that,
more often than many would like to admit, are as dark as Tommy's secrets.
That lack of
communication with parents is so essential to a teen’s social development
(building relationships with their peers, and trusting them more than their
parents) is also so frightening as a parent. No matter how much your children
tell you, they won’t, and probably shouldn’t tell you everything. Navigating
that as a parent is stressful and difficult. I often joke that middle school in
the US (grades 6-8, or ages 12-14) is hell for everyone; the students, the
teachers, the parents. Those anxieties definitely went into the writing of that
book.
Within this same story you present us with a shadow
that little by little takes on supernatural overtones. Was that your only
intention, or did you plan for that shadow to represent the inner darkness of a
human being?
realidad.
I wanted both!
Similar to A Head Full of Ghosts, I wanted to pick at another liminal,
ambiguous area of our experience. Again, what is known and what can’t be known
is such fertile ground for horror stories, for all art, really.
And while I would love to explore the rest of your
work, I'll stop here by delving into "The Cabin at the End of the
World." So, the question is this: what would you have done if you were in
the same situation as your characters? Would you sacrifice a member of your
family to prevent the end of humanity?
With the caveat
that in the novel it is never clear if there is an apocalypse happening, I am
on team Andrew. Or at least, I hope I would be as brave as Andrew to choose
love over fear, and to refuse to participate in such evil.
1. Pasemos ahora a temas menos peliagudos.
Now let's move on to fewer sensitive topics. Leaving
Stephen King, Shirley Jackson, and Edgar Alan Poe aside, what other horror
authors have you read recently whose work you value?
R: ¡Hay tantos!
«The
Liz Hand, Victor LaValle, Sarah Langan, Laird Barron, Nadia Bulkin, Rachel
Harrison, Gus Moreno y muchos más.
There are so
many! Mariana Enriquez’s novel Our Share of Night is my favorite book of the 21st
century. Stephen Graham Jones is a marvel and a singular voice. Eric LaRocca
writes grotesquely beautiful stories that get under your skin. John Langan’s
The Fisherman is a must read novel. There are so many more great horror writers
working now including Nathan Ballingrud, Liz Hand, Victor LaValle, Sarah
Langan, Laird Barron, Nadia Bulkin, Rachel Harrison, Gus Moreno, and so many
more.
1. Y para ir cerrando, ¿te has planteado
And to wrap things up, have you considered venturing
into a genre other than horror?
Most of my
early novels (four written before I wrote A Head Full of Ghosts) weren’t horror
novels, but were instead darkly comedic. My first two published novels in the
United States featured a narcoleptic private detective in South Boston.
I’m lucky that
my current publisher allows me a wide definition of what a horror story can be.
I would like to write more comedy, though, at some point.
Finally, what advice would you give to those looking
to become horror writers?
Read widely in
and out of the genre. Write to please yourself and not some imagined audience. Write about something that upsets
you.
Nuevamente, muchas
Again, thank
you so much for granting me this interview, I sincerely wish you much more
success and terrifying inspiration for your future creations!
leo!
